Is your tech infrastructure super expensive? You could save a lot of money on the cloud! A study of cloud migration by The Hackett Group looked at results from 1000 organisations concerning 4000 migrated applications in 15 categories. They found 70% of technology infrastructure could be moved to the cloud in the next 2-3 years.
It’s common for companies to find their tech infrastructure costs fall by 12% after moving to the cloud, but some found a reduction of 37%, more than three times that of typical companies!
Michael Fuller, principal of The Hackett Group explains…
“This study was designed to look beyond the hype and truly quantify the benefits of both moving to the cloud and maximising the benefits of cloud infrastructure. And the results clearly show that companies are using the cloud to deliver broad strategic value. It’s about better security, improved speed, quality, and agility. At its best, cloud migration can be the foundation that allows companies to rapidly improve their products and services.”
What is Cloud Migration?
Cloud migration is when a company, partly or completely, moves their digital assets, services, databases, IT resources and applications to the cloud. Moving from one cloud to another is also sometimes referred to as cloud migration.
Ageing servers and inefficient infrastructures are often the catalyst making many companies want to move onto the cloud. Migration has the potential to reduce costs, but also simplifies management, increases agility, flexibility and scalability. It’s also said to boost performance overall.
A Word of Warning
It’s important to remember however, that despite the cloud’s benefits, you should still be mindful of how you use it. If you don’t have an organised system, it’ll stay that way on the cloud. In the midst of the climate crisis, you should be aware that everything stored on the cloud uses energy, resulting in a potential very high carbon footprint! On-premises data storage can also have a high environmental impact. It’s just a matter of being aware of the contributing factors and working to manage them.
Conclusion
This new study draws attention to the many benefits of the cloud and offers yet another confirmation that it is a positive and inevitable part of the future. Cloud migration has been gathering popularity recently, with big companies like Uber making the move. All kinds of companies are finding a place for themselves in this new environment. It’ll be interesting to see if, as the study predicts, 70% of tech infrastructure will move to the cloud over the next three years. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
