We’re all well aware of the changes playing out in the tech sector, not least for CISOs. AI/ML and cloud technology are leading the way for digital transformation. But with change and innovation comes risk. Businesses of all stripes are having to change tack and ensure they have the tools to minimise these risks. With this in mind, let’s get to grips with the new priorities of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).
Cybersecurity Is Step One
With the speedy progress made in cloud adoption and artificial intelligence alongside geopolitical risk, ransomware and cyberattacks, CISOs are shifting their focus onto cybersecurity. Heidrick & Struggles conducted a survey of 262 global CISOs and found this was a strong theme. With cybersecurity being built into core software development and administrative processes.
The SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) has released a proposal that would require public companies to give details of their boards oversight on cybersecurity. This has brought renewed urgency to discussion. It’s clear that companies are coming to recognise the importance of security for their future, with the number of CISO’s on corporate boards more than doubling this year.

CISO Phil Venables’ team at Google Cloud have released guidance on security for corporate boards. Their report ‘Perspectives on Security for the Board’ lays out prominent threats and principles for risk oversight related to cloud adoption. In simple terms, the report promises to help boards understand today’s risks and develop the tools to effectively respond.
He told Forbes.
“The message for boards to drive more modern infrastructure is to not just solve your security challenges but also increase agility efficiency and drive IT security as part of your digital transformation.”
“We’re driving innovation, but at the http://cloudcomputing.newshub.talkabout.tech/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2023/06/ImageGenerator_The_power_of_the_internet_transforms_the_future__9a3bc078-cc4e-4837-b985-2d7271bca32c-2.webpe time we’re being highly focused on the trust, safety and responsible use of AI.”
Summary
So there you have it. Cybersecurity, particularly in relation to cloud adoption are the main pillars of the new CISO. It’s likely that AI and cloud technology will continue to reshape business for years to come. This will of course come with risks but in the long run promises to transform efficiency, accessibility and productivity. If the CISOs can get a handle on things, these benefits should outweigh the teething problems. Do you think CISOs are cut out for the challenge?
